Clinical microbiology has evolved over the years to incorporate both conventional biochemical methods and molecular technologies. Her role at DLS is to balance new technologies with gold standard conventional methods. Molecular diagnostics is rapidly changing, and DLS added high-throughput testing capabilities during the SARS-CoV-2 response. During that same time, the molecular lab launched solid tumor profiling to service oncology patients with on-island testing.

In addition to DLS, Dr. Woron is an adjunct at Hawaii Pacific University teaching Master of Public Health Epidemiology and an adjunct at Louisiana State University teaching professional development courses in instructional development, food safety and biological hazards.

Prior to DLS, Dr. Woron spent 17 years in public health in New York, Tennessee and Hawaii focusing on select agents, assay development, food safety, enteric diseases, emerging diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. Her career began at Albany Medical Center in New York in the clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostic laboratories.

Dr. Woron holds a doctorate in public administration from Tennessee State University, master of public health in epidemiology from East Tennessee State University, master of science in biology – forensic molecular biology, and a bachelor of science degree in biology from the State University of New York at Albany.
