Reinventing Hawaiʻi’s Energy Future

For the past 50 years, Hawai‘i residents and businesses have counted on Par Hawaii to reliably and safely produce a range of petroleum-based products to meet their energy needs. These products – gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, marine fuel, fuel oil for electrical power generation, and even asphalt for our highways and roads – have been central to Hawai‘i’s economy.

To support Hawai‘i’s transition to more renewable energy use and to reduce carbon emissions, Par Hawaii has already begun to explore ways to produce clean energy. The transition will not occur overnight. However, Par Hawaii is taking steps in the right direction.

Positive Changes

“The Par Hawaii team includes talented engineers and other professionals who are examining new ways to use our existing refinery and fuel distribution infrastructure to deliver energy to Hawai‘i’s consumers. We recognize we cannot do this alone,” Eric Wright, Par Hawaii president said. “We’re collaborating with partners in a variety of sectors to ensure the science, commercial viability, and policies to support these positive changes are all aligned and help create a smooth transition for our state.”

Valuable Partnerships

In partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, Par Hawaii has begun to look at ways to produce sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), right here in the islands, by reconfiguring existing processing units at the refinery. In addition, selected Hele and 76 stations operated by Par Hawaii are distributing biodiesel, produced in the islands by Pacific Biodiesel.

Energy Assurance for the Future

“This is an exciting time to be an energy provider in Hawai‘i,” said Wright. “The 50th anniversary of our Kapolei refinery this year provided an opportunity for the Par Hawaii team to revisit the original purpose of the refinery and reflect on the outpouring of support from government, business, and community leaders to build our refinery back in the early 1970s. We’re renewing our commitment to make energy assurance a priority for our state, now and into the future.”

Hawaiian Telcom

Closing the digital divide with fioptics expansion

Reliable, high-speed internet service is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Lack of online access limits options for families and businesses. Without it, children fall behind in school because they cannot participate in online classroom instruction, parents cannot conduct basic transactions or apply for jobs, and businesses cannot effectively compete in the global marketplace.

Technology and connectivity are critical to everyday life. Hawaiian Telcom is leveling the playing field and improving digital equity in Hawai‘i by ramping up its investment to expand broadband availability to more local businesses and families, including those in underserved communities. Last year, Hawaiian Telcom invested more than $100 million to expand and support its fiber network.

By the end of 2022, an additional 50,000 homes and businesses will have access to Hawaiian Telcom’s 100% fiber internet service Fioptics. More than half of these locations will be on the neighbor islands, including Moloka‘i and Lana‘i. Hawaiian Telcom is also expanding Fioptics to Kapa‘a on Kaua‘i, Wailuku on Maui, Kea‘au on Hawai‘i Island, and Nanakuli and Wai‘anae on O‘ahu.

This expansion will help to ensure that more people in more places have access to broadband service as Hawai‘i emerges from the economic hardships brought on by the pandemic.
